What We Could Do

Bismillah,

At least there's one thing that people tend to think of how IT (Information Technology) provides wealth factor increment; it enables fast information flow and thus presenting more knowledge to others who might be needing it instantly. This knowledge is furthermore used as a basis of any kind of developments.

Imagine how people communicate with the others via conventional methods such as letters or postal services. Updated informations given are now obsolete -if you see what I mean, you might notice when you are sending news at present date to those in rural areas ... your news would be received within months!!- and that's dangerous, why ... because the time delay causes slow informations receive. As time goes by the more loss of information will occur. One of the consequence is ... some people will know that internet DOES exist long after people strive to discover new kind of NGN (Next Generation Network); seamless, high speed, and sustainable technology.

A new concept of NGN provided for rural communities in Indonesia might be introduced by my former thesis adviser ... Dr.Ir. Armein Z.R. Langi. The idea is how to provide a cheap yet effective technology for rural areas, so that the digital divide among metropolitan cities and develop-underdeveloped cities is no longer exist. This might take time and tremendous effort also support from the government regarding the policy, regulations, and standardization but doing nothing means be nothing no ? Technically ... this concept is viable and feasible.

The concept of this social purpose NGN or known to us as rural-NGN can be shown below:

pic 1. r-NGN concept

Picture 1 shows how the overall network will be established. Of course, according to the picture multimedia services can be provided. We're looking forward a broadband wireless access which speed is more than 2 Mbps, the choice goes to Linksys WRT54G 802.11b/g Wi-Fi .

Me, Salman Teguh Pratista, S.Kom, MT; Ahmad Meiriansyah, ST, MT; Akmal Hidayat, S.Si and some WiNNERs are implementing Wireless Mesh Network as a pilot project for r-NGN. The idea is ... what if we implement hybrid mesh-infrastructure network instead of dedicated wireless network only. And after some measurements and calculations ... we obtain a steady level of 15-16 Mbps throughput; far more than we expected.

But alas ... a different vendor of wireless adapter caused a significant drop of throughput. This of course will be a major problem.

The concept of wireless mesh network can be seen in picture 2 below:

pic 2. Wireless Mesh Network

As you can see from picture 2 above, each node corresponds to another and whenever a node is not present due to some circumstances, another node would update its routing table so that the data packet can be transferred through another route.

Now that this pilot project is on the go ... we expect another development to improve its performance and coverage. Later on this project would be carried on in Eastern of Indonesia which needs more concern on IT development.

ICEEI 2007 and R&R

Bismillah,

Well finally ICEEI 2007 has ended. ICEEI is an acronym International Conference on Electrical Engineering and Informatics. Next conference will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2009.

I actually didn't attend the conference fully because I had to finish my research proposal which was due on 19th June. Well after a long journey and fierceful effort we had finished our proposal, and now we're waiting for the acceptance. I have no idea on when accepted papers would be published but we have to wait for a while.

O ... back to the story I would like to write.

This international conference was also sponsored by Univertisi Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). Most of the participants were Malaysians and some of them were females, Japan, German, and of course ... Indonesia were also participated.

As for my friend however ... well, he got to know some of the females from Malaysia he3x. -You know, boys will be boys :P-, me too. I met and introduced myself to some of them as well like Nur Idawati, Kamilia Kamardin, Siti Mahfuzoh binti Wasikon, Noraida binti Ismail, and Dareena Syahida Suib. All of them had their own papers and presented their topics during poster session. But one topic that attracted my attention was about UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) posted by Widyawardana Adiprawita, MT. Right now I am also involved in Aeronautical Engineering project on establishing universal precision landing system and aerial disaster recovery Information System.

The conference itself was closed by Dean of STEI-ITB (School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics) Prof. Dr. Adang S. Ahmad precisely on 0400. After about an hour of cleaning the East-West exhibition hall, we went to the lab to recover ourself from the exhaustion of having involved in the conference for about an hour or so. After browsed on the net for some informations regarding my Ph.D and listening to music by streaming I decided to go home.

But ...

Along the way walking to the parking lot, me and Arinuddin Umar had an idea on taking the 3 of those we've met for sight seeing of Bandung although it would take only one night. So after Maghrib Ari called Ms Noraida to ask her agreement on having a slight tour of Bandung, and she agreed :) so be it! 3 of them we took around for S&S were Noraida, Siti, and Dareena. First of our tour was Great Masjid of Bandung located in Southern Bandung, they took some pictures there as well. After there, we traveled to Braga Citywalk. Dareena decided to buy blankon .. a traditional Sundanese headwear as a souvenir to her family and friends.

Last of our trip was to Warung Lela located in Northern Bandung. All of our guests were amazed to see how beautiful it was topside view of Bandung. Noraida, Siti ordered a steamed chicken rice, while Dareena ordered Yahun rica-rica. While we were eating we talked a lot of things aside engineering stuffs, more to chatting. Siti surprised to hear me talking in Malay accent, Noraida exposed the Malaysian cultural traditions, Dareena explained to me who is Wan Zaleha Radzi. So after taking pictures on me and our guests we took them back to their hotel. As a token of our friendship Ari gave a present to them and in return Noraida exchanged a sheet of 1 Ringgit, that money may not be used Noraida told us by the time we meet again someday that money serial number MUST be the same, he3x.

Today morning they've gone back to Malaysia. I intent to meet them at the airport but somehow I was unable to do so because the traffic jam today was absolutely painful. I'm gonna miss our occasion ...

Good bye ICEEI 2007 ... I'm looking forward to submit my paper(s) to ICEEI 2009 later. And to those we took for a slight S&S, take care out there and I hope we meet again soon :)

For a day ...

Bismillah,

I miss my jobs which I haven't accomplished .... well at least for this week due to my dengue. I hope it isn't as worse as what I thought, but wallahu alam ...

Next week my friend in WiNNER would have his final theses exam, I was hoping to attend to give him moral support though he said it is okay if nobody watches since it's quite embarrasing for him --well, not quite ...--, anyway congratulations on your sucess :) we certainly proud of having own WiNNER's victory, remember our motto at lab guys ... we're all winners !!

Well that's all I could say right now since it's getting close to Shalat Jum'at and I've to take rest thereafter, to restore my condition.
